Open Streets Detroit

  • Roosevelt Park 2200 Michigan Avenue Detroit, MI, 48216 United States (map)

Open Streets Detroit consists of two free public outdoor active recreation events scheduled for Sunday, September 25th, 2016 and Sunday, October 2nd, 2016 from 12pm-5pm. The events will cover nearly a four mile stretch of major roadway, connecting Michigan Avenue and Vernor Hwy. In this unique first-time event Michigan Ave. and Vernor Hwy will be transformed into a giant street park as the road is temporarily blocked to automobile traffic from Campus Martius to Vernor and Livernois. People will have the opportunity to bike, walk, jog, skate, and more through the car-free street.

Participants making their way through the street park will also have the opportunity to sample free exercise demo classes and activities located along the route, such as hula hooping, kickboxing, yoga, and more. In addition, outreach booths hosted by local businesses and community groups will provide resources for wellness and sustainable living. The atmosphere will be festive with music and performances, animating the re-invented public space.

Open Streets Detroit strives to improve community relationships, encourage livable public spaces, and generate more opportunities for cultural understanding through the creative use of streets and public spaces.
